Hi everybody!

Relay for Life was this past weekend and we had an amazing time! The event ran from noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday and raised an impressive $57,260 for the American Cancer Society, which will be used to fund research for a cure and various services to support those battling cancer and their families. We were so glad to participate and as a team, we raised $1150 before and during the event!! It was a fun and inspirational weekend and I would like to extend a special thank you to the following people:
Our donors-Thank you so much for your support!
The Relay Team-Thank you guys for raising money and spending your weekend on the track!
Friends who visited-Thank you for walking with us!
You are all amazing and thank you to each and every one of you for making this an amazing event and weekend!!

We will be posting photos from Relay on the Facebook group soon, but until then, enjoy a sample of photos from the weekend!

Hi everyone!

Yesterday (Saturday 3/24), the USC Archery Team competed in the 2012 California Collegiate Championship (C3) at El Dorado Park in Long Beach! C3 is an outdoor competition open only to archers from California colleges (as well as guest archers) that has an individual, as well as team competition. The individual competition was a metric 900 round shot at three distances: 60m, 50m, and 40m. At each distance, archers shot five 6-arrow ends, for a total of 30 arrows shot each round and 90 shot during the entire individual competition.

During the team rounds, teams of three archers competed against each other in elimination rounds, with each archer shooting two arrows, one after another, so that each team shot a total of six arrows in two minutes at a 70m target. Since we didn’t have a full men’s or women’s team, Scott, Jessica, and Mallory competed as a men’s recurve team and Josh spotted our arrows!

Thank you to Jeep, Henry, and Milton, who all came out to support us! We all had a lot of fun and I’m proud of the whole team!! Congratulations to Jessica Chen, Josh Katz, Mallory Klum, and Scott MacDonald for doing a great job at their very first outdoor tournament! A few photos from the competition are below, and be sure to check out the whole album of photos on our Facebook group!

Fight On!

Hi everybody!

USC Archery Club is participating in Relay for Life this year, so included below is information about the event if you would like to join our relay team or if you would like to donate on behalf of the club. The event is a lot of fun and is a great way to make a difference, so if that sounds intriguing to you, read on!

Relay for Life is a 24 hour event organized by the American Cancer Society that starts at noon on Saturday, March 31st and ends at noon on Sunday, April 1st and is held at Cromwell field on campus. The purpose of this event is for communities to band together to raise money to help fight cancer. Here’s how it works: team members raise money before the event and take turns walking around the track during the 24 hour period. You can raise as much money as you want and you can walk for as long as you want!

Our goal is to have at least two people from the team on the track for the whole event, so the more people who join our team, the easier that will be! Relay for Life asks that each team member raises at least $100, but it’s not required. However, if you do raise $100, then you receive a free t-shirt and free food throughout the event!

The American Cancer Society is making a real difference in the lives of people with cancer and those of their loved ones. Money raised during Relay for Life goes toward:
-Cancer prevention and early detection programs
-Free services to assist cancer patients during their recovery
-Research for preventative measures, treatments, and ultimately, cures
-Promoting legislation that improves access to health care and aid in cancer prevention

If you would like to join our team, go to our team’s page at http://main.acsevents.org/goto/USCArcheryClub, then click “Join our Team” and select Team Member Registration and fill in your details.

Even if you aren’t able to participate in the relay, you can still help us to raise money by setting up an account within our team or by asking people you know to donate on behalf of the Archery Club. If you would like to make a donation on behalf of our team, you may visit our team’s page and click on “Donate to our Team.”

If you know someone who had, or is currently fighting cancer, you may choose to honor that person by donating money for a luminaria. These are paper lanterns that are decorated with a personalized message that will be placed around the track on Saturday night during the Luminaria Ceremony. Luminaria donations are available in various denominations and you may make a donation and submit the message you would like to appear on the luminaria by going to our team’s page and clicking on “Honor a Loved One with Luminaria”

If you do decide to join our team, I will be sending out a follow-up email this week with more event details and fundraising ideas! Please feel free to email me with any questions at archery@usc.edu!

Relay for Life is a fun way to make a difference in the fight against cancer, so join USC Archery Club in taking a stand against cancer!!

Thank you!
Mallory

Hi everybody!

The team just got back from lovely Tulare, CA, where we spent this past Saturday and Sunday (2/25 and 2/26) competing in the 2012 National Indoor Target Championship! Four of our members–Jessica, Scott, Josh, and Mallory–represented USC in a competition against other collegiate archers and our coach, Jeep, came up to support us! We competed against teams from all over the West Coast, including UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, Irvine, and Humboldt State. The National Indoor Championship is held in several locations over three consecutive weekends. Since we participated during the first of the three weekends, the final results and rankings will be released in a few weeks.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the structure of indoor target competitions, I’ll give you a brief summary! The competition takes place over two days and each day, competitors shoot two 300 rounds, for a total of four 300 rounds during the event. During each 300 round, competitors shoot three arrows in each of ten ends, for a total of 30 arrows per 300 round and 120 arrows over the tournament. Each arrow is scored, with the highest score (10) awarded for arrows that hit the center ring in the target. That means that you can earn a total of 300 points in a 300 round (Aha! Makes sense!) and a grand total of 1200 points at the end of the four 300 rounds. This whole process usually takes about four or five hours each day.

After we shot our first two 300 rounds on Saturday, we all competed in team rounds, in which teams of three archers compete against each other, with each team member shooting (one at a time) two arrows each, for a total of six arrows shot per team in two minutes!! It’s a very fast-paced and fun style of competition! Scott’s team won 2nd place in the Men’s Recurve division of the team rounds, so congratulations to Scott!!

We all had a lot of fun this weekend and everyone on the team shot really well! Below you’ll see our scores from the competition and a few photos! There are more photos on the way and I’ll be sure to post an update so that you all can see them! Congratulations to the team and thank you to Jeep for coming up with us and to all the people who sent us good wishes!!

Fight On!

Hi guys,
We are definitely excited to start the new semester and look forward to meeting everyone! Here is some general information about our club.

Our club predominantly shoots recurve archery. Those interested in joining do not need to have any prior experience since we provide all the necessary equipment and have student instructors that will teach basic form to newcomers. If you have your own equipment, you are definitely welcome to bring it and practice with us! Club dues are $30/semester and $50/year and cover equipment maintenance costs, carpooling costs, and most social events. Checks are preferred! If you are a driver, we express our gratitude and compensate you at the end of the school year based on the number of passengers you helped transport. We always welcome new drivers!

For practices, we meet up in front of the Subway at the University Village (at the intersection of Jefferson and McClintock).
Sunday practices are open to anyone and are there for those that want to have fun, relax, and shoot. We meet up at 4pm to carpool over and practice is from 5-7pm, so we generally get back to campus at around 7:30pm. Roughly once a month we have socials that will usually either be before Sunday practice or afterwards.

Tuesday and Friday practices are for advanced archers, or archers that are planning on dedicating time to compete at competitions. Archers that attend our advanced practices are expected to attend at least one practice per week. For these practices, we meet up at 6pm to carpool over and practice from 7-9pm.

Since we carpool over to the archery range at Rancho Park, we require those planning on attending practices to RSVP at our website (http://www.uscarchery.com/rsvp-for-practice/). We send out confirmation emails to those that reserved available seats usually by the night before. Due to the high interest in the beginning of the semester, we often lack the number of drivers that are able to carpool everyone over to the range. If we are unable to accommodate the number of archers attending practice, we email those that are at the bottom of the RSVP list to notify them that they are on the waiting list. Therefore, make sure to RSVP early to guarantee a spot. Also, if you RSVP for practice and are unable to attend practice, we ask that you notify us as soon as possible so we can give your spot to someone on the waiting list.

Our RSVP page is usually refreshed on Sunday nights for the upcoming week. Make sure to RSVP for the correct week or else your RSVP will be deleted and you will lose your spot! If you do not get a spot for a practice, do not despair! Try RSVPing for the next week and we will try to give you preference over those that were able to attend the previous practice. That being said, we usually have more space and equipment accommodations as the semester progresses, so don’t be afraid to show up in the middle of the semester!

Our first Sunday practice is the coming Sunday, January 22nd. The RSVP page is now open so you may submit your reservation. We will be meeting at 4pm in front of the Subway at the University Village. We need you to fill out a waiver, so try to bring a pen and make sure to bring your health insurance information! For new drivers, driving directions to the archery range can be found on our website under FAQs.

We also have info sessions on January 18th @ 2pm and January 19th @ 1pm in the Trojan Presentation Room (STU B3) if you would like to ask us any other questions or come learn about our club.

We hope you are enjoying your long weekend and hope to see you soon!

Jessica

PS We just sent out an email to those that signed up at the involvement fair. If you did not receive the email and would like to be added to our mailing list, email us at archery@usc.edu to let us know!
